The Faculty of Information-Document Communications (the FIDK) is the oldest faculty of the university. Its history goes back to 1944, when the Faculty of Library and Information Science was set up at M. Gorky Minsk Pedagogical Institute. Since that time the faculty has prepared more than 16 000 specialists in librarianship and museology, who work in library and information organizations in Belarus, Hungary, Poland, Russia, the Ukraine, the USA, and other countries of the world. There are a lot of outstanding people among the faculty graduates are Hero of the Soviet Union A. Mazanik, authorized representative for Religious and Ethnic Affairs L. Huliaka, Doctor of history professor A. Sarokin, writer A. Fedarenka, Director of the National library of Belarus R. Matulski, Honoured Culture Workers of the Republic of Belarus H. Aleinik, L. Kiruhina, S. Yudo, and others.

Studying in the following specialties is carried out at the faculty: Library and information activity (management) (qualification – Librarian-bibliographer. Manager); Library and information activity (automation) (qualification – Librarian-bibliographer. Specialist in automated library and information systems); Museum studies and protection of historical and cultural heritage (cultural heritage and tourism) (qualification – Manager on cultural heritage and tourism). Master course: Librarianship, bibliography and bibliology (Master of Pedagogic sciences); Museology, conservation and restoration of historical and cultural facilities (Master of Culturology).

The faculty includes four departments: the Department of Belarusian and Foreign Philology, the Department of Library and Information Activity, the Department of Belarusian History and Museology and the Department of Information Resources and Communications.

The educational process at the departments of the faculty is based on modern information and communication technologies, innovative methods and forms of training. Students acquire the skills and abilities of work in the environment of modern automated systems used in libraries and museums of Belarus; they are engaged in the preparation of a variety of professional projects, sociocultural and creative activities. At the Department of Belarusian and Foreign Philology the Literary Association “BUKet” has been working for many years. Scientists and specialists from other countries are invited to teach academic disciplines. Student exchanges with foreign universities are carried out.

A feature of the graduates of the faculty is that they have good skills and abilities of work with information, they can systematize it, analyze and create new information products and services that are demanded in different areas: science, education, culture, economy. Another direction is – to be engaged in socio-cultural activities. Fellows of the Special Fund of the President of the Republic of Belarus for the Social Support of Gifted Pupils and Students study at the faculty, as well as holders of scholarships of Francysk Skaryna, Piatrus Brovka and the Council of the University.

For the purpose of practical-oriented training, agreements have been concluded on cooperation with the largest libraries and museums in the country, which are the basic organizations of the faculty: the National Library of Belarus, Yakub Kolas Central Scientific Library of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, the President Library of the Republic of Belarus, the Republican Scientific and Technical Library, the Republican Scientific Medical Library, Belarusian Agricultural Library named after I.Lupinovich of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, the regional libraries, the National Historic Museum of the Republic of Belarus, the Belarusian State Museum of the Great Patriotic War, the State Literary Museum of Yanka Kupala, the National Polotsk Historical and Cultural Museum-Reserve, the National Historical and Cultural Museum-Reserve “Niasvizh” and many others.

The faculty graduates are in demand in libraries, information services, museums, archives, publishing houses, tourist organizations, and mass media. They are involved in various professional projects’ and sociocultural and creative events’ preparation.
